Pink Shirt Day & Pork Cutlets in a Creamy Mushroom Sauce

It is our choices…that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities

J. K. Rowling

Today is Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day is also known as Anti-Bullying Day. It was an idea that originated in Canada in 2012 and is recognized annually on February 28.

It’s kind of strange that it took 2 thousand and 12 years to recognize that we have a problem. It’s not like bullying started in 2012. I’m pretty sure bullying has been around since the dawn of time. We had a few bullies in our class. Now that I look back on it I feel like they needed more hugs in their life. There are all different types of bullies, the insecure person that feels the need to treat others badly to make themselves feel good, the kid that is trying to fit in and is using the only tools that he has been taught to use, the mean kid that only gets attention by treating others badly or the popular kid that uses their power against others… there are really so many different types 😞.

We are trying to raise 2 kind daughters. We use the word kind many times throughout the day. When I list qualities that I like in a person I talk about being kind before looks or any other quality. My kids are listening and I want that to be the quality in a person that stands out to them too. We have had a few first hand experiences with this topic since the kids have entered the school system. Just last week SBean came home from school with big fat tears spilling out of her big brown eyes saying, “today 4 of my friends made a circle around me and made fun of me and my name.”

It’s not that we didn’t have bullying when I was a kid, we absolutely did, in fact even as an adult I see bullying in my daily life 😞.

HBear has tween bullying issues that are all new to me. Cyber bullying. We have had a few issues recently and I have to say I am not looking forward to navigating through this new wave of bullying.

This past September Ninja and I were lucky enough to see one of our favourite artists perform in Portland, Oregon, Frank Turner. His latest album is called Be More Kind. I absolutely love the lyrics to the song by the same title. HBear and SBean love them too 💕 Listen to this beautiful song HERE!

Be More Kind
Frank Turner

History’s been leaning on me lately
I can feel the future breathing down my neck
And all the things I thought were true
When I was young, and you were too
Turned out to be broken
And I don’t know what comes next

In a world that has decided
That it’s going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind

They’ve started raising walls around the world now
Like hackles raised upon a cornered cat
On the borders, in our heads
Between things that can and can’t be said
We’ve stopped talking to each other
And there’s something wrong with that

So before you go out searching
Don’t decide what you will find
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind

You should know you’re not alone
And trouble comes, and trouble goes
How this ends, no one knows
So hold on tight when the wind blows

The wind blew both of us to sand and sea
And where the dry land stands is hard to say
As the current drags us by the shore
We can no longer say for sure
Who’s drowning, or if they can be saved

And when you’re out there floundering
Like a lighthouse I will shine
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind

Like a beacon reaching out
To you and yours from me and mine
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind

In a world that has decided
That it’s going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind

Ninja has been working SO hard getting the 1st episode of Speak Out up and on air for our local Community Radio, Peach City Radio CFUZ. His 1st episode launched this past Sunday and it was pretty amazing! Super professional, super informative and Ninja sounded like he totally knew what he was talking about!!!! While he has been busy with that project, I have been helping out with Our Liner Notes. Our Liner Notes is Ninja’s podcast that is all about bringing an album to the table and talking about specific tracks according to a theme. This week I had on our good friend GorvilleBesty and we brought Female Artists to the table! Check out Episode 98: Let’s Hear it for the Ladies! HERE!

Every January most bloggers put out their top 10 recipes from the past year. This past New Year’s I spent a full day collecting recipes that I wanted to try this year. This was one of them! This meal was so easy to prepare and tasted so damn good! This will definitely be a regular in my menu planning from now on!

This past week was HBear’s last cross country skiing lesson! I am so fortunate that I have a job that allows me too share these first time experiences with the kids! Being up at Nickel Plate is really something special! It is beautiful up there and exercising in the sunshine and fresh air is something I will never take for granted.

The girls had Jersey Day at their school last week. Neither of them wanted to wear a Vancouver Canucks jersey 😜😂

This weekend Ninja and I took the girls to the One World Festival. In Winnipeg we grew up going to Folklorama which is similar but on a much much bigger scale. This was a really nice afternoon! We got to try foods from different cultures, learn about other countries, watch some pretty amazing performances, and do some origami!

Infusion Day & Slow Cooker Meals

My morning ritual of showering for a fresh start to my day has progressed to a once-a-week occurrence. Like everything else that my MS affects, less shower time is not by choice. I take sponge baths daily of course, but actual showers are reserved for when I have enough energy for the scary, slip-and-slide thrill ride known as my bathtub’s shower. – Debi Wilson
