My Mom had a green thumb. Her cousin Heather has a green thumb. Heather’s daughter has a green thumb. Half of my Poppy’s yard consisted of a huge magical vegetable garden. My Mom’s cousin’s daughter is a florist. It runs in the family. It passed over me but it definitely runs in the family.
I can tell already that SBean is following in my Mom’s footsteps. She loves flowers, plants and herbs. Her favourite board game is called Wildcraft. Wildcraft is all about learning about healing herbs. When she planted her fairy garden this past spring, she checked on it every day. She learned all about the plants she was growing and she smelled it. She smelled it and that is how I know she is a gardener in her heart.
There’s 1 small problem though, she is petrified of worms and bugs. Like terrified. If she sees a worm she screams at such a high pitch that dogs in the neighbourhood start howling! I asked her what she was scared of, worms are harmless! I said, “what are they going to do? Inch up to your foot and head bang it?” She looked up at me and with tears falling from her scared little eyes she said, “Mommy, they don’t even have faces! That’s so creepy!” 😂 I totally agree!
I’m not sure what to do? How hard to push her? Will she grow out of it? I personally hate worms. I’ve ALWAYS hated worms. I certainly did NOT grow out of it. Ninja used to carry me to our car after it rained out so I could avoid the massive worms that creeped out of the grass and on to our sidewalk. Just to let you know, I have NEVER (except that 1 time I pushed SBean in front of me when I saw a snake. But I mean it was a snake 😆) acted this way in front of my Girls. I really try my hardest to not show my irrational fears to them. Big fears. Like cancer. Sure, that’s not an irrational fear that is a genuine fear and it is healthy to have fears. I want them to know that even Mommy has fears but worms? I even picked 1 up once for HBear 😬. I would absolutely hate for either of my Girls to miss out on something that they could love because of fears.
HBear is cautiously fearless. If people she trusts tell her that it’s ok, she does it. It used to scare me that she would try anything but now it scares me more that fears will get in the way of trying new things. SBean’s fears have been front and centre these past few months. She is scared of the dark, her dreams, worms, bugs, and fish. She refuses to go into the lake right now because fish might get her. This makes me sad because I would hate for her to miss out on the fun. I mean, we live between 2 gorgeous lakes! Now to be honest, I hate fish. Again, I never talk about it in front of her though. When I was a kid I hated fish but still went in the lake. In fact, my lips would be blue with cold before my parents could drag me out of the lake. It’s only been since adulthood that my fear of fish has kept me out of lakes. That and the cold 😆.
Lately she is also scared of being away from us. She hates to sleep alone, be alone, or even close the door to the bathroom. When Ninja and I went golfing for his birthday the Girls stayed home with Papa and J. SBean texted me constantly. When I didn’t answer back immediately she cried to HBear and asked what they would do if we didn’t come home 💔. I can only imagine what this pandemic is doing to exacerbate these fears. I’m just worried about the short term and long term effects.

It is SO hot out right now! When it’s hot we like to eat light and refreshing dinners. In fact, when it is this hot out we tend to eat a lot of salads. I was trying to find something that would be filling, tasty, healthy and refreshing after a long day in the hot sun and I found this one! It was delicious! I ate it for lunch for the next 2 days! The Girls loved the crema even though they say they hate avocados 😂. Ninja isn’t the biggest fan of quinoa but the yummy BBQ chicken and fresh vegetables really helped change his mind for this one! He gave it 2 thumbs up and the Girls have already asked for it again!
BBQ Chicken Quinoa Bowls with Avocado Crema
Adapted from Recipe Runner
2 tablespoons oil, separated
4 chicken chicken breasts, sliced into strips
3 tablespoons barbecue sauce
1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can corn
1 cup cherry tomatoes, chopped
1 bell pepper, sliced
1/4 cup diced onion
1 of an avocado, peeled
1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
1/2 of a lime, juiced
2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste
Water to thin to a drizzling consistency, I used 1-2 tablespoons
Purée the avocado, yogurt, lime juice, and cilantro your food processor. Thin with water as needed until it’s a drizzling consistency.
For BBQ sauce onto chicken and toss. In 4 bowls, equally divide the quinoa and barbecue chicken. Top with the black beans, corn, tomatoes and peppers. Garnish with cilantro and drizzle with the avocado crema.
This week we started off by checking off 1 of my bucket list items! We weeded the yard and we mowed the lawn. After the whining and the crying and then the begrudging help 😂 the Girls checked off 1 of theirs and had a picnic in the backyard!
I am so grateful for our new home. Especially during these last few months when our homes have become our schools, workplaces, dance studios, gyms and spas. I am thankful for this amazing view from my living room 💛.
I have continued my latest Beachbody program, Morning meltdown 100. It is challenging and I really like the weightlifting component! I am slowly upping my weights and I can feel the strength I am building.
As soon as SBean hears me move in the morning she flies into my room and asks if she can make a smoothie. Usually she makes it with no problems but the other morning she dropped the yogurt and… well, I spent the entire day cleaning up Greek Yogurt from the ceiling down to the cracks in the floorboards 😳.
We also fit in morning snuggles, a spa day with facial masks and The Princess Diaries, Smuggler’s Smokehouse, the Blue Jays and HBear won the library gift card of the week!
Speaking of books, I have found a great author! I am late to the party because he has been around a while but I’m just happy that I found of him! Daniel Silva writes about an art restorer who is also an Israeli spy named Gabriel Allon and have been enjoying reading about his adventure while sitting on our deck in the sun.
